Hey, im studying a degree in ICT and have an assignment I require help with from the general public and would greatly appreciate your knowledge to be shared.

I am asked to review recent developments in the field of Information Systems Planning and the success or failure of the application of these concepts and techniques with examples.

I was wondering if anyone reading this has any personal experiences within the development of ISP’s and if so could they share their knowledge so I could use it as an example(s) in my assignment. Specifically if there is any knowledge out there on the key concepts and techniques currently being used within the current field. And how relevant these are to the development. I would love to hear from a information systems professional, many thanks

Essentially an information system plan (ISP) is what is sounds just like. It’s the development of plans and strategy’s to incorporate an information system into an organisations business system in a structured and planned way. Identifying the existing and relevant technologies available, a direction can be established for the organisation, and by implementing an ISP, the organisation can ensure that sufficient planning has been undertaken to achieve the required successful implementation of said system.

I’d like to combine my knowledge of business with my love of computers with a Masters in MIS. Is this a good career choice? Is it over flooded and what type of experiences have MIS graduates had with finding employment after graduation? Any information would be appreciated.

You will still be working with the corporate world! You can not run away from it. Currently employment is difficult to find no matter what degrees you hold but hopefully it will be better soon.

What knowledge you will gain from each, and which one is more marketable and popular in the working field
Can a computer information system get the same jobs as Computer Science ?

Computer Information Systems (this degree comes in other names but we’ll just use this one) is going to teach you things like Networking, Web Design, maybe a little Programming, etc… it varies actually. In short you have the chance to learn about many types of software programs, e.g. you could take Windows courses, PC Repair courses, Networking courses, Programming language courses, etc.

Computer Science on the other hand will teach you about more of the theory… e.g. how transistors and the computer chips on board work… you might learn about logic gates and the parameters of Digital Systems. (I don’t know how to explain it much better, I’m not a Comp Sci major)

Oh and either way, with either degree you’ll still get a job somewhere. Trust me. I get calls all the time for jobs, and all I have are A.S.s.

EDIT: Yes you can get the same jobs with both degrees… it happens a lot actually. It’s funny, at one of my earlier IT jobs from about 2 years back I was in a department of 10 and I was the ONLY one with an IT degree (my boss included) until one of my supervisors earned his BS in MIS. But we all did the same work pretty much.

Anyways, I was charged last year with B&E and the crown offered me diversion (there were special circumstances) and I completed it successfully. I went to court, presented that information and the judge said, ‘the case against (my name here) is dismissed’… what does this mean exactly? Haha, thanks!

Diversion means that if you comply with the court demands, the charges will be withdrawn and you will not bear a criminal record. It will be eliminated from your record. I think they only do this in Ontario though, and usually for a first offence.

I have skills in both CIS and Graphic Design . I’m passionate about both and was wondering if there are any jobs out there where i can do something using my knowledge from both fields.

YES! If you are looking for a 9-5 job are you willing to move is the next question

Freelance Work: You can do freelance work that involves both. There are several sites that offer freelance gigs/jobs for independents (you can google them but they will charge for their services and beware of scams). You can get a membership at a service that offers freelance jobs/leads to choose from; one good one is by "invitation only". You have to request a membership by emailing gdleadservice@gmail.com. It’s free/cheap.

Or you can search the internet for freelance jobs, but this may be more time consuming than it’s worth (think 8 hours searching for a freelance project + 5 hours to complete it for $100 = $7.69/hour)

You will be hard-pressed to find the EXACT 9-5 job with those qualifications if you are unwilling to move. Examples of companies to look for if you want a 9-5 – anybody that does "cloud" computing with multiple users (financial firms, Medical Firms/industry are moving in this direction) and wants an in-house designer and CIS in one package.

I am a sophomore in high school, male, 16, mostly A’s, have an interest in computers, but lack interest in schooling and have no plans to go to college right after HS. So I’m thinking about enlisting in the Navy to become an Information Systems Technician.

I don’t have much knowledge of information systems or computing, but I have interest in it. And I will take the ASVAB next year, and probably join the DEP (Delayed Enlistment Program) my senior year, then ship to boot camp soon after graduating HS.

Do you think this is a good choice?

An IT is a good job – you will learn about, and work with, the latest communications systems and networks. It is a highly sought after job in the Navy.
