A Political Theory of Geeks and Wonks
Lots of people get interested in political ideas through political campaigns. Maybe this is because politics forces you to decide who you are and what you believe.
I can vaguely recall when I was very young, perhaps 7 years old, that I discovered that my best friend’s family considered themselves Democratic whereas I was pretty sure that my family was Republican.
I asked someone what that meant and only received hazy answers that concerned seemingly big issues about government. I didn’t think much about it but nonetheless, they were my first thoughts on the thing that would consume my life.
So it is for lots of people: politics is the entry way into taking political ideas seriously. If your interest intensifies, you tend to go one of two ways: wonk or geek. These are terms that apply in many categories of life – Wikipedia gives serviceable definitions of both wonk and geek – but the terms take on new meaning in politics.
Political wonks are fascinated by process. They love the game. They get as much satisfaction from observing as changing. They want to be players above all else. Ideals bore them. History is mere data. Intellectuals seem irrelevant. What matters to the wonk are the hard realities of the ongoing political struggle. They defer to title and rank. They thrive on meetings, small victories, administrative details, and gossip about these matters. Knowing who is who and what is what is the very pith of life.
There are political wonks and policy wonks. They exist on all levels of society. They appear to be running things, because their aim is to control the levers of power in just the right and strategic way, which means in a way that benefits the other wonks of their tribe. Geographically, life begins and ends in the beltway. They thrive on keeping information private and cartelizing their class. Their newspaper is the Washington Post, which they consider to be the insider report.
In contrast to this are the policy geeks. They are no less fascinated by detail but are drawn to ideals. Observation alone bores them. They are drawn to the prospect of change. They don’t want to be players as such; they question the very rules of the game and want to change them. They are happy to make a difference in the ideological infrastructure, whether big or small. They tend to work alone and totally disregard caste distinctions. They are interested not in the surface area but what’s underneath, not the veneer but the wood. In software terms, they are forever looking forward to the next build. They are risk takers, so they prefer to debug after the system is live.
In politics, this means that the geeks are drawn to ideas, even radical ideas. They can easily imagine what doesn’t exist, which makes them dreamers and entrepreneurs. And so they are attracted to and study history and philosophy and economics. It doesn’t matter if a lesson can be learned from the ancients or moderns; indeed, unearthing an old idea and bringing it back to life has a special appeal. They thrive on making information public, on smashing old structures, breaking cartels, and busting monopolies of power. Geographically, they can live and work anywhere, and they have no attachment to any single information source.
The geeks and wonks can work together but their will always be a natural tensions between the two. The wonks think the geeks are hopeless, powerless, reckless outsiders whose heads are full of useless and unrealistic fantasies. The geeks think that the wonks are part of the system and, therefore, more than likely corrupted by it, and increasingly so.
Broadening the view, the struggle to control history is a battle between the wonks and the geeks. The wonks are the ones who consolidate, stabilize, and entrench the status quo; the geeks are the ones who prepare revolutionary change. The wonks freeze it into place and make it work more efficiently; the geeks imagine and work toward a future that no one thought was possible. They wonks rule out drastic and extreme measures as imprudent and reckless; the geeks think these paths are the only ones worth pursing, and have confidence that the unknown future will somehow work itself out. The wonks try to bring the king around to their point of view; the geeks kill the king.
Caesar: Wonk – Brutus: Geek ; Hamilton: Wonk – Jefferson: Geek
Cheney: Wonk – Ron Paul: Geek
Part of the agenda of democracy is to turn the whole of society into a herd of wonks who believe in the process and want to make it work. But it isn’t so easy to control human nature. There are always the geeks to contend with who see that the system is based on a lie and want to overturn it. Why should the majority rule the minority – or, more precisely, why should the well-organized minority rule the relatively indifferent majority? What we need is democracy 2.0 in which power and privilege are not steered but abolished altogether.
Who will carry the day? In the short run, the wonks are right. They win. They rule. They ruled the ancient world for hundreds of years. They ruled the Soviet Union for 72. They rule the US today. But the long run is another matter. Rome and the Soviet Union fell, in revolutions enacted by geeks. The wonks eventually come to underestimate the power of ideas and underappreciate the effect of ideals.
Which life is worth living? The wonk is famous, even legendary. The geek rarely achieves fame, even when he does change history. Why? The wonks write the history. But it is the geeks who make history happen in the first place. The geeks will look back at their lives with satisfaction that they did their best to realize a dream. The wonks, looking back at their lives, see that they were little more than a cog in a machine. Someday, even in the US, they may have to concede that all they did crumbled into nothingness. http://www.lewrockwell.com/paul/

Can’t really do much with a resume without seeing it in its own WP where we can see your spacing, indents, etc. As it is on this screen, it doesn’t look legible.
I can tell you, though a quick fix. You need to keep your tenses the same. You san on the one hand "DirectED and managED," then immediately go on to say "Consult."
General rule here is for the job you’re currently doing, use present tense as "Direct and manage." You’re still doing it, so present tense makes sense. On down in your resume when you describe your duties in earlier jobs, use the past tense.
You are also inconsistent with your capitilization. Your first bullet correctly has caps, "Plan, organize…" Then your second bullet you go to lowercase. "evaluate." Make all these caps, including your bullets below, "research…" "install…"
Even though some "experts" will disagree, it’s still best, unless your older and have lots of years of experience, to have one page resume. I think you have too much detail on this one job, it’s clear you’re going way over one page. Remember if somebody looks at your resume, thinks it’s not easy to read, they won’t, you didn’t get a chance even if you are wonderful. Keep it one page, get some white space on it, make it attractive. If you’re running an IT shop it will be expected that you know how to make Word or WordPerfect very attractive.
I have a real readability problem with this, but as I said, without seeing it in the form your Word or whatever will give it, it’s hard to evaluate.
Good luck with your job search.

First, I’m not a resume expert. Overall, it looks good, but here are a few grammar/punctuation things:
First paragraph: If you are going to start out in past tense (-ed), stay that way. You started with "directed and managed," so in the 2nd line put "consulted," or just put "Direct and manage"
First paragraph (2nd to last line): Put a semicolon after organization, and say "contributed to" instead of contribute (I think you forgot the word "to"). Use "contribute to" if you are going with present tense.
1st bullet point: "Develop" should be a lower case ‘d’ as in "develop."
3rd bullet point: Remove "where appropriate,". It’s unnecessary.
7th bullet point: Use "ensure adherence to software licensing laws". Formal English still doesn’t allow a preposition to end the sentence.
12th bullet point: You switched to past tense again.
13th bullet point: Since you didn’t capitalize Organization in the next bullet point, don’t do it now. Just use "the organization."
16th bullet point: Find something different for "heads." Maybe try executives?
17th bullet point: Same thing with Organization; pick one and stick with it.

ATLANTA – UAL Corp.’s United Airlines and Delta Air Lines Inc. have been discussing a combination between the nation’s second- and third-largest carriers that would keep the United name and the corporate headquarters in Chicago, The Associated Press has learned.

Shares of both airlines surged on the news.
There is a sense of urgency in the talks, which have been going on for some time and continued as recently as a week or so ago, an official with knowledge of the talks said Wednesday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak publicly.
"They want to get something done before a new administration gets in and so they get the clock ticking on" federal regulatory approval, the official said.
The exact financial details of the transaction being discussed are not clear. But the talks involve United being the name of the combined airlines, the headquarters staying in Chicago and Delta’s Atlanta hub being an operational center for the two carriers, the official said. One possible scenario involves Delta CEO Richard Anderson being the chief of the combined airline, the official said.
Delta also has had talks with other airlines, the official said, without specifying which airline or the status of any such talks.
A spokesperson for Chicago-based United did not immediately return a call Wednesday seeking comment. Delta spokeswoman Betsy Talton declined to comment.
Shares of Delta rose $1.92, or 10.2 percent, to $20.67 in afternoon trading. UAL shares gained $4.20, or 9.7 percent, to $47.70.
Delta said in a statement Wednesday that its board has established a special committee to work with management to review and analyze strategic options for the airline. Top executives have said recently they are trying to determine whether consolidation makes sense for Delta.
When Anderson was named in August as Delta CEO to replace Gerald Grinstein, there was immediate speculation in the investment community that Delta and Northwest might eventually merge. Anderson is a former CEO of Northwest Airlines Corp.
Anderson immediately tried to dispel such speculation, telling Delta employees he wasn’t coming to Delta to facilitate a deal with Eagan, Minn.-based Northwest.
Delta’s statement Wednesday was responding to pressure by a hedge fund that owns 7 million Delta shares to consider combining with UAL.
Pardus Capital Management LP said in a letter to Delta’s top management on Tuesday that it is "imperative" that the company undertake a merger transaction with another airline in view of soaring fuel prices and what it described as the increased risks of going it alone.
"Consolidation is needed to de-risk the industry and time is of the essence as now is the right regulatory environment," said Karim Samii, president of Pardus, and Shane Larson, a principal.
The hedge fund executives said they had determined since making a similar recommendation in a Sept. 7 letter that "the most attractive and practical combination would be a Delta and United Airlines combination."
It cited figures from a consulting firm estimating that the benefits of such a pairing would be about $585 million and said a combined Delta-United would boast a broader network than any other combination.
Pardus also owned 5.6 million shares in Chicago-based UAL as of Sept. 30.
Pardus executives said a Delta combination with Northwest would produce even bigger benefits of about $1.5 billion, primarily from combining the smallest hubs — Detroit/Cincinnati and Memphis/Atlanta.
"However, Northwest may not enable Delta to complete the breadth of network that business travelers require, resulting in the need for a potential follow-on transaction at a later date in order to achieve the same breadth of network that UAL would provide out of the box."
Pardus, citing information provided by the air transport consultancy Simat, Helliesen & Eichner Inc., said a third potential combination, with Continental Airlines, would produce no synergies and would raise other challenges.
Robert Mann, an airline consultant in Port Washington, N.Y., said United’s broad Pacific network and Delta’s huge Atlantic presence would complement each other. However, he said, combining fleet information systems and labor could pose challenges. The biggest problem would be that neither carrier has any recent track record of integration, he said.
"I would see this as a very risky move from the standpoint of the actual implementation," Mann said.
I really hope it doesn’t go through. While their routes may complement each other very nicely, many other problems would occur. As the article says, there would be issues with the fleet: United, for the most part, uses A320-family aircraft for their narrow-bodies, while Delta has B737s, B757s, and MD-88s (those better not go) (and some MD-90s too). Their wide-body fleets are similar, though.
Delta said no to the US Airways merger offer (good thing, too). I’m hoping they say no to this one too.
I graduate in ‘11. I can choose two majors. I’m thinking about what will be best on the American, Canadian, or European job market.
