My recommendation is ALWAYS go through a travel agent, believe me agents can work with you to get you exactly what you want with the re-assurance that the booking is done PROPERLY and you are made aware of any and all information regarding your travels.

Depends on what airline your flights are with. If it is with a low-cost airline like Air Asia or Ryanair, then travel agents will only have the same access that you have, as they use a web booking system, which is similar or, in most cases, the same as you would use as a regular customer. If your flights are with a scheduled airline like British Airways, Emirates, etc. then the travel agent you originally booked with will have access to your booking, and maybe be able to access your reservation through their GDS and change your dates. This some times works, even when the airline’s own system is down.

To be honest though, an airline’s system will only ever be down for a matter of minutes, and you have probably just spoken to someone that doesn’t want to help. It happens more often then you would believe…

Some airlines allow you to change your bookings yourself online on the airline’s website. But that system may also be part of what’s ‘down.’

You may just have to wait a few hours and then try again.

Information is the key to all businesses, it can give you up to date running costs compared to profit thus ensuring that you do note unknowingly descend into a loss.
It can also indicate what are your strong selling lines and what ones are a waste of time and effort.
It can give you your best selling areas for different types of product.
These are the sort of thing that you need to make a rapid response to a possible problem.
Knowledge is the key to everything.
A possible weakness is that you depend on it too much to the exclusion of common sense experience and foresight remember that the information you receive depends on how the system is set up..
