how can i transfer all my information/data from one hard drive to another?

My old hard drive was too small so i put in a new hard drive with more space. I need to know for one how i can get my computer to recognize the new one. And for two how i can get ALL my information.data onto my new hard drive. I want to put all my files and programs onto my new hard drive. Like AOL and the operating system and EVERYTHING. please please help me
k thanks

Acronis has trial versions of many of their products. I used one to transfer the contents of a drive to a new larger drive. It worked so well that I purchased a retail copy of the back up utility to keep my wife’s HDD with all of our digital pictures safely backed up.

It’s been too long since I did it for me to reliably give you a step by step walk through, but I had never done it before and the Acronis directions enabled me to do it without pulling my hair out.

  1. For an operating system, you have to reinstall it using an installation CD.

For files, you can just copy and paste them to the new drive.

You have to replace the old drive, boot from Windows installation CD, then it will install windows. Then you can reinstall all of your old programs.

  2. Usually when you buy a new internal drive, it will come with a CD that will not only help you set it up initially, but often will include a program to copy over your old drive to the new drive. Its not something you should try if you have no experience with such things. I mean, you would have to be a real nerd to get thru this unscathed!!! You… ummm… don’t look very much like a nerd. Can you borrow one somewhere?

  4. Unless you want to spend countless hours re-installing your Operating System (Windows) and all of your programs, you need to either have a complete backup of your original hard drive and backup software to install it on your new hard drive, or use specialized software like Paragon Software’s "Drive Copy." See source below.

I’ve used Paragon Software for many years. It’s great for backups and preparing new drives by copying everything exactly off your old drive.

Visit their site and read more about "Drive Copy." You can get a personal copy for $29.95.

    Good luck!
