Am I making a mistake?

Okay, so, I’ve wanted to be a photographer when I grow up since like..3rd grade. I’ve always really enjoyed taking pictures. A few months ago, I took a personality test as part of my school.. I got personality type: ISTJ. I am so much like that personality it’s scary..

Now over the past few weeks, I’ve been watching the tv show: House M.D. It persuaded me to be a doctor. Between that and my personality type ISTJ, It all came together. I’m starting high school next year and you may think this is too early to decide on a career choice, but I want my high school classes to all compliment my career choice. I really want to be a doctor. I know the tv is nothing like it is in real life, there isn’t even such thing as a diagnostics department.. I think..hah..

I’m hoping it’s just what I would be better at and that I’m not being pursuaded by a tv show.

ISTJs generally have the following traits:

* Value tradition, security, and peaceful living
* Will work long and hard to fulfill duties
* Can be depended on to follow through on tasks
* Loyal and faithful
* Stable, practical and down-to-earth
* Family-minded
* Dislike doing things which don’t make sense to them
* Dislike abstract theory, unless they see the practical application
* Natural leaders
* Prefer to work alone, but work well in teams when necessary
* Extremely observant, they take in facts via their senses and store them internally
* Vast, rich inner store of facts which they rely on to understand problems which they encounter in their lives
* Profound respect for facts and concrete information
* Make decisions objectively, applying logic and rational thinking
* Dislike change, unless they are shown it’s benefit in a concrete way
* Have strong opinions about the way things should be done
* Appreciate structured, orderly environments
* Have very high standards for their own behavior and the behavior of others
* Not naturally in-tune with other people’s feelings
* Able to accomplish almost anything if they put their minds to it
* Community minded "good citizens"

ISTJs have one character trait which puts them at a definite advantage in terms of career success – Perserverance. An ISTJ can do almost anything that they have decided to do. However, there are areas in which they will function more happily and naturally. An ISTJ will do best in a career in which they can use their excellent organizational skills and their powers of concentration to create order and structure. ISTJs seem to fit extremely well into the Management and Executive layer of the corporate business world.

The following list of professions is built on our impressions of careers which would be especially suitable for an ISTJ. It is meant to be a starting place, rather than an exhaustive list. There are no guarantees that any or all of the careers listed here would be appropriate for you, or that your best career match is among those listed.

Possible Career Paths for the ISTJ:

* Business Executives, Administrators and Managers
* Accountants and Financial Officers
* Police and Detectives
* Judges
* Lawyers
* Medical Doctors / Dentists
* Computer Programmers, Systems Analysts, and Computer Specialists
* Military Leaders

What do you think?

As you shared, you are a possible fit for every career you stated above. The real question is what career is it that you see yourself doing in the next five years or so with complete contentment and without resentment.

It would also help to seek advice from someone who know you. Your parents friends etc. can help you assess what you can do and possible do in the future. This will help you get a clearer picture of things. a clearer picture of you.

It appears that you have a good head on your shoulders as your already contemplating and preparing for your future so keep it up but dont stress and pressure your self too much on the issue.

Its not just a matter of knowing what you can do but what you can do happily and preparing for it.

Hope this helps.

Good luck!

  1. I would be cautious about basing your career choice primarily on a personality test. I would highly recommend reading the book listed in the source for a more critical perspective on the Myers-Briggs. A few notes:
    * If you give people any list of characteristics and tell them that it describes them, people will think that it in fact does, even if the characteristics are just random (I forget the technical term for this)
    * Many people, if they take the Myers-Briggs test a second time, will get a different result
    * The Myers-Briggs is not based on modern psychological research.

    On the other hand, if you really want to be a doctor regardless of what your personality test says, go for it! Do bear in mind though that you need to have really good grades and a willingness to stay in school for a very long time.

    The last piece of advice that I would give is not to get too fixed to a single goal, and be willing to explore new avenues of potential interest during your time at high school.

    Um, I would suggest you think about it and not follow some stupid quiz thing. Also, House is not what real medicine is about. You would do well to not find your career path by watching the boob tube.
