What can I do with a degree in Computer Information Systems?
There’s a program at my local tech school where you get an associate’s in computer technology from them and then transfer to a university and get a BA in Computer Information Systems. (Or you can choose Information Management and Systems.) What are the differences between these two and what kinds of jobs can you get? Thank you so much!
I don’t personally know the answer, but the U.S. Dept. of Labor has a wonderful website that offers all the information you need and then some. http://www.bls.gov/oco/ – Occupational Outlook Handbook. It has a search function on the first page where you can enter your interests and it will give you all the education required information, list schools in your area, give you salary info as well and suggest other occupations related to that search.
Hope this helps.

Computer Information Systems which is more now known as Management Information Systems.
It is a mixture of business and computers, with more focus business. At the end of the day, the education is very general, especially in computers. Most colleges change the name from CIS to MIS because it focuses more on business. The reason is that computer software, software, and training is expensive and constantly updated. They dropped the focus to avoid the cost, yet still wheel you in to pay them.
The good thing is that it looks more marketable. You should have little problems getting into business. However, it may turn some companies off by the word computer and they’ll misunderstand that you also have education in business and just assume you’re a computer person…and won’t call you. The really bad thing is that it doesn’t prepare you for computers at all. Almost worthless. You won’t be able to do anything. The vast majority of MIS/CIS majors do not work with computers and if they do, it’s because they knew about computers already through work or self training, or other. They don’t learn it from college.
My opinion is that MIS/CIS was created to attract people who aren’t good with computers, but interested in computers and business. Think about it! MIS/CIS is being run by business people, not computer people. Basically, it’s a scam. If you look for work, how often do you see openings for CIS or MIS? It’s rare. The job posts are usually more specific and detail and usually refer to IT information technology…which is a word that CIS/MIS programs avoid since it’s too advance and no business people are confident to use it. You can’t go back and sue them because they’ll say "hey, our program do not offer IT". Too many gradutes with Computer IS degrees, with no computer jobs.
