What salary range should I seek as a new graduate in Computer Information Systems?
I am a senior at James Madison University studying Computer Information Systems and I plan to pursue a career in IT Consulting or Advisory. One question I am consistently asked in interviews is what my salary expectations are.
The problem I am having is that I don’t know what I should be expecting; I don’t want to sell myself short, but I also don’t want to bid too high for a job I would have really enjoyed.
Where should I look to get a really good grip on what starting salary range I should expect?
40k to 50k depending on how good you are and what company you are applying for

sorry to say, but the only thing that diploma is going to get you is the right to apply for the job. if you put salary requirements on there, they might just toss that app out the window. Read Cash Flow Quadrant and you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about. If you want to get on the right side of that quadrant, give me a call. 7747664668 and I can help

If you are just starting out in the field with no previous experience then your Begging wage is going to be considerably less then those that have years in the field.
In the Mid West a first year CIS/IT Tech will start around 29-36K a year, I wouldn’t expect more unless you can convince your new employer that you have a unique talent that could save them money and time.
Companies hire young grads like yourself out of college to train them in their IT Business, so the training continues even after you get out.
If you are looking for more then this to start you should be confident and firm about your begging wage and have the ability to improve quickly or you won’t last long.
I have been in this industry for 15 Years Now and still have to negotiate prices because large firms can hire fresh students cheaper then paying for our services.
Best Regards!

With a Computer Science degree from an accredited university, expect a salary in the mid 50’s at a high technology firm.

let me address one of the answers posted by another user:
He does not have a CS degree he has a CIS degree which is a business/IT hybrid.
I would not expect more than 30k starting out, and you are going to have a hard time finding even that. Let me give you some golden advice, IF you have the means to do so please pursue your MBA or another advanced degree. You will probably end up doing this anyway after you work some low paying shitty jor for a few years. Finding work with a CIS degree is not easy, finding good paying work with a CIS degree is damn near impossible without years of working experience. I’m not trying to discourage you, I’m just letting you know my experience from 2004 and pretty much everyone else I knew that graducate CIS at that time. Even today with 3-4 years experience I am having a hard time finding a new job.
