iPhone 4 Indoor Video Test

The reason I chose to shoot indoors (with and without artificial light) was to better illustrate “extreme” conditions – knowing that people shoot video “inside” all the time with little regard for light sources.

Notes:
* I didn’t edit the raw footage for a reason; compare sources for yourself.
* The Evo seems to have a wider field of view compared to the iPhone.
* The iPhone audio sampling rate is 44k (64Kbps) vs 8k (12.8Kbps) on the Evo.
* Sunshine through my red curtains was difficult for each camera to handle.
* The Evo lens seems to tint blue or red at times.
* Frame rates were diminished on each device: 24fps (iPhone) vs 11fps (Evo).
* The Evo produces an MPEG-4 “3GP” file vs an MPEG-4 “MOV” file from the iPhone.
* The default Evo camera app is superior in features, but lackluster in performance.
* Research indicates the Evo upscales 320p to 720p, FWIW.
Clearly, the Evo (with default settings) doesn’t hold a candle to the iPhone 4 (with default settings). I’m sure other camera apps would force the device(s) to record differently, but this test was designed to compare phone defaults.
While the iPhone isn’t perfect, I’d certainly consider it a Flip, Kodak Zi*, and Vado killer.

To me their just phones. But considering that the Sprints plan is way cheaper than AT&Ts plan is a big plus. Now I am leaning more towards the Evo because well, There is most likely less if anything at all to go wrong with the phone. Just look at the iPhones antenna problem and Apples response to it is you’re holding it the wrong way? Now Apple is reinventing the way we hold phones to. Well just my 2 cents on both phones. Treat them equally. Feel free to respond, only logical responses apply.

people seem to forget Apple invented the iPhone, or the new standard interface/mobileOS for their own category of “smartphone”… so they refine their creation, they don’t waste time trying to make it bigger like the competition.
I think it’s amazing that they’ve made its even smaller, with higher rez screen, more features and higher quality components… by their standards of design, not conceding to the one upmanship of the clones. If you want a larger iPhone get the iPad and use Skype.

if HTC came out with a phone just 3 months earlier that had the iphone 4’s camera and display, i’d say “good job. you finally cracked the iphone” and i’d probably buy it. but this phone hardly stands up to the 3gs!!!

the real funny thing is, you cant even view the HD videos you just recorded with your evo in its native resolution on the evo’s screen. even the retina display blows everything else out of the water. the evo is still trying to compete with the 3gs (and by these test i’d still want my 3gs camera)
