Navy – Information Systems Technician?
I am a sophomore in high school, male, 16, mostly A’s, have an interest in computers, but lack interest in schooling and have no plans to go to college right after HS. So I’m thinking about enlisting in the Navy to become an Information Systems Technician.
I don’t have much knowledge of information systems or computing, but I have interest in it. And I will take the ASVAB next year, and probably join the DEP (Delayed Enlistment Program) my senior year, then ship to boot camp soon after graduating HS.
Do you think this is a good choice?
An IT is a good job – you will learn about, and work with, the latest communications systems and networks. It is a highly sought after job in the Navy.
IT’s where they send the guys who aren’t as smart, Ironically enough. The people who are knowledgable, they put them in different Advanced Electronics positions, like Sonar Techs and Intelligence Specialists, who take care of their own systems.
From what I’ve heard, they also get mistreated from the rest of the guys on the ship and there isn’t alot of chance for advancement.
