This demonstrates the dependence of geospatial analysis on BOTH geographic information systems software AND statistics. This demonstration combines the functionality of Maptitude from Caliper Corp and the open source R-Statistics.
Starting with tabular data, the data is geocoded. Now a data layer, new data layers can be formed. In this demonstration a point data layer that has been geocoded is used to create polygons of geographic proximity. These polygons are overlaid with other data layers, in this instance a point layer and a polygon layer. The geographic proximity layer can now truly be considered a “new” data layer. Attributes of the new data layer are exported to a flat data file (CSV). R-Statistics then reads the flat data file and statistical operations are performed

Alvin Cullum York was born in the small town of Pall Mall (PAL MELL), Tennessee in 1887. Because of his religious convictions, he wanted nothing to do with the killing during World War I. But he had a change of heart and became the most highly decorated soldier from that war. Tom Nolan from the MTSU department of Geosciences has combined an interest in history with his knowledge of geographic information systems or GIS to pinpoint the location of Alvin York’s heroic actions.
